👨🏼🎨 Following the trail of Vincent van Gogh
Art and history enthusiasts may enjoy visiting the Van Gogh House in Nieuw-Amsterdam, the place where Vincent van Gogh stayed in 1883 while searching for inspiration.
Here you can learn more about his time in Drenthe and discover how the rural landscape and the quiet countryside influenced his work. It is a fascinating glimpse into a lesser known chapter of Van Gogh’s life.
🌿 Explore the Bargerveen nature reserve
If you are looking for peace and wide open nature, the Bargerveen nature reserve is an excellent choice. Located only a short distance from Landgoed Zwartemeer, this unique landscape is known for its vast peatlands and untouched natural beauty.

🪨 Discover the ancient Hunebedden
Drenthe is famous for its hunebedden, impressive prehistoric stone monuments that date back more than 5,000 years. They are among the oldest surviving structures in the Netherlands and remain one of the region’s most remarkable historic landmarks.
A great place to learn more about them is the Hunebed Centre in Borger, where you can explore their history and significance.
If you do not have much time, you can still visit one closer to Emmen. Hunebed D45 can be found in the beautiful Emmerdennen forest, just outside the city.
🛍️ Spend some time in the city of Emmen
For a relaxed afternoon, the centre of Emmen is well worth exploring. The city offers a pleasant mix of shops, cafés and restaurants where you can take a break between matches.
